Best Flour Options For Banana Bread

The BEST Banana Bread Recipe | Healthy + Easy

I love a mix of all-purpose flour and oat flour in my banana bread because it results in a final product with such an ideal density, moisture content, and flavor profile. The oat flour also gives this banana bread a nice fiber boost.

Instead of all-purpose flour, you could also try one of the following flours in this recipe:

  • White whole wheat flour
  • Gluten-free all-purpose flour blend

The whole wheat flour offers more fiber and a slightly more earthy flavor. Regardless of which flour you choose, your final result is sure to be delish.

What’s the difference between banana cake and banana bread? Depending on who you ask, banana cake has similar ingredients to banana bread, but banana cake typically has more eggs, contains buttermilk, and uses only all-purpose flour.

The other big difference is that a banana cake is generally topped with frosting.

Make Sure You Have A Good Pan To Make This Easy Healthy Banana Bread Recipe

If you need a loaf pan, I highly recommend you purchase this one I would purchase 2. I have 2, but sometimes I wish I had 4.

This is a regular sized pan which is what I used. However, you can turn this recipe and make them into smaller loaves which are super fun for gift ideas.

is a great pan and you can use this entire recipe to fill up those 4 mini loaf pans. The loaves are so cute and the perfect size to give to friends.

You can also try mini muffins with this easy recipe.

If you dont have a mini-muffin pan, I highly suggest you get one. Mini muffins just simply taste great. They are faster to cook and easier to eat.

I love my Wilton mini muffin tins, but for just a few dollars more you can get a silicone pan. These are great because the mini muffins just pop out so much easier.

How Can I Tell If Its Cooked All The Way Through

Cooking time will vary depending on a few factors- elevation, how big the bananas are, how big the eggs are, how hot your oven runs, etc.

This banana bread will usually take 50-60 minutes to cook, but sometimes it may take longer.

You should make sure you check for doneness by inserting a toothpick in the center of the bread and removing it. If it comes out clean- the bread is done! If raw dough sticks to it, it needs more time.

How To Make Healthier Banana Bread

Easy banana bread Healthy eating recipes

Weve on Inspired Taste before and love the recipe. This healthier version takes everything we love about the original, but makes a few smart changes to make it lower in calories, sugar, and fat. Plus, we swap butter for better-for-you olive oil and add whole wheat flour.

We both love the original recipe and were determined to create a guilt-free version that stood up to it. This banana bread bakes up to be moist, dense, and delicious.

The first change was to add whole wheat flour. We use half all-purpose flour and half whole wheat flour. You could use 100% whole wheat, but keep in mind that the loaf will taste nuttier and will be a bit more dense. White whole wheat flour is also a great option.

We use a combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour for our Whole Wheat Pancakes. They are so light and fluffy!

Next, we significantly reduced the sugar. In our original recipe we call for a 3/4 cup of brown sugar. This makes the bread incredibly moist and delicious, but since we were looking for healthy banana bread most of the sugar had to go!

We have reduced the sugar from 3/4 cup to 1/3 cup. A major savings and your blood sugar will thank you. We also call for unrefined pure cane sugar. If you dont have it on hand, granulated or brown sugar will work in its place.

Speaking of sugar, we add an extra secret ingredient to the batter black strap molasses. Just one tablespoon packs in lots of flavor and adds a richness to the batter.

Adjusting The Sweetness Of This Recipe

On its own, the level of sweetness for this Healthy Banana Bread recipe is mild to moderate, depending on what youre used to. However, the optional oat and brown sugar streusel on top thats included in this recipe definitely add more sweetness!

If youre looking for a more sweet recipe, be sure to add that streusel on top. You can also add 2 Tablespoons of raw sugar or brown sugar to the batter!

Gluten Free Okay By Me

I promise Im not going all gluten-free on yall over here, but my mom recently eliminated gluten from her diet to see if she has an allergy to it that might be causing some skin irritations, which inspired me to create a few more flourless baked goods, like this flourless banana bread recipe, that I can bake for people who dont or cant eat gluten. Ill probably never go gluten-free myself unless I have to for medical reasons, but if I had to, I know Id survive. There are so many great recipes and products out there that allow you to enjoy baked goodies even if you cant have gluten. But I cant imagine a life without glutenous breads, cookies, donuts, etc.!

So it got me thinking, what are some classics that need to be reinvented so that those who dont eat gluten can still enjoy them? Banana bread came to mind. Its a breakfast favorite! This gluten-free banana bread recipe is also dairy-free, which can be another tricky ingredient for sensitive digestive systems. I dont use almonds , walnuts, or pecans in my recipe, either, so no worries for those with nut allergies. And with no added salt, its low in sodium, too. And still, its incredibly delicious!

Can The Healthy Banana Bread Recipe Be Vegan

As long as you use nondairy yogurt, the recipe is naturally vegan.

I often use my own vegan homemade Greek yogurt when I make this recipe, but it works fine with non-Greek plain yogurt as well.

Readers have successfully used coconutmilk yogurt, cashew yogurt, soy yogurt, and almondmilk yogurt. So feel free to use whatever type you wish.

You can even change up the flavor if you want. Try strawberry, peach, or even blueberry yogurt for a fun and subtle flavor twist.

Or if you dont have yogurt or prefer not to use it, just increase the banana to two cups and omit the yogurt completely.

Other Baked Goods That Use Olive Oil

You can store this olive oil banana bread at room temperature for a few days and it will stay super moist and delicious. Just make sure you keep it in an airtight container. You can also refrigerate it for longer, and even freeze it for a few months.

I usually slice it and then store it, so I can grab a piece in the morning for breakfast without worrying about getting the cutting board out. I do like popping it in the microwave though if I have time, because warm banana bread is soooo good.

Storing & Freezing Tips

  • To store: this banana bread should be kept well-covered in foil or plastic wrap at room temperature for up to 3 days, then I recommend transferring to the fridge or freezer.
  • To freeze: wrap the banana bread in plastic, then tightly in foil and finally place in a reusable bag or freezer friendly bag for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature once you are ready to eat. You can also feel free to freeze individual slices for a quick on-the-go treat.

Tips For The Best Zucchini Banana Bread Recipe

  • Use very ripe bananas for maximum flavor and sweetness. You want them to look quite speckled and brown! Mash them in a bowl with a fork, or place them in a large Ziploc bag and squeeze them with your hands until theyre perfectly mashed.
  • I use a large box grater to shred my zucchini, which still blends easily into the bread. If you really want the zucchini to be undetectable, use a finer grater so that the zucchini has a finer texture. You can also use a food processor to shred the zucchini if you like.
  • Be careful not to over-mix the batter. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients just until theyre combined. Too much mixing and the bread will come out tough, dense, or dry. Thekey to keeping a quick bread moist is NOT over-mixing.
  • The total baking time will vary depending on the type of pan that you use . I prefer light-colored pans , which cook the bread more evenly. Dark metal pans tend to cause the outside to burn before the inside cooks through. Youll know that the bread is done when a toothpick inserted in the middle of the loaf comes out clean.
  • If the top of the bread starts to get too dark before its cooked through, tent loosely with aluminum foil.
  • Do not overbake the bread or it will become dry. My loaves are typically done by the 50-minute mark, but some may be done in as little as 45 minutes so check it early.

Can I Freeze This Bread

Healthy and perfectly moist Banana Bread Recipe

Bake and cool completely. Place in a gallon size Ziploc container, let out as much air as possible and seal. Freeze banana bread for up to 3 months.

I recommend you do not cut bread in individual slices before freezing. It retains its moisture better this way.

Defrost on a counter. Takes about 3-4 hours. Bread will taste just like freshly baked. Pop it into a toaster or toaster oven for a minute for that freshly baked bread warmth and aromas.

  • White Whole Wheat Flour replacing half of the whole wheat flour with white whole wheat helps to produce a lighter, fluffier banana bread.
  • Baking Soda baking soda creates a softer, more tender crumb when used in banana bread.
  • Baking Powder baking powder is used as a leavening agent to add nice rise to your final loaf.
  • Salt enhances the flavor of your banana bread. We used kosher salt.

  • Butter butter adds a rich, delicious flavor to the bread and helps create a more tender loaf. You can substitute coconut or other neutral oil if desired.
  • Yogurt we used plain 4% Greek yogurt here.

  • Vanilla Extract optional, but adds a yummy flavor!

How To Know When Banana Bread Is Done

Banana bread can be undercooked easily, and unfortunately, once the loaf has cooled, even if it is gooey in the middle you cannot put it back into the oven.

  • You can tell banana bread is done when a butter knife inserted in several places in the whole loaf comes out with a few crumbs clinging, but no wet batter. It can be very hard to judge.
  • My favorite way to know when banana bread is done is to use an instant read thermometer. Once banana bread reaches 200 degrees F in the center, it is fully baked.
