We Can End Hunger In Our Time

Institute Insights: June 2017

Bread for the World is a Christian advocacy organization urging U.S. decision makers to do all they can to pursue a world without hunger. Our mission is to educate and equip people to advocate for policies and programs that can help end hunger in the U.S. and around the world.

Food banks are also essential but we focus on advocacy. Why? Because federal nutrition programs provide roughly 10 times as much food assistance as private churches and charities combined. With the stroke of a pen, our government leaders have the power to create policies and programs that impact millions of people at once.

Our faith in Christ is the foundation for our mission and compels us to love our neighbors near and far. We are led by the values of our faith to stand up for those experiencing hunger all over.

Open your mouth for those who cannot speak, and for the rights of those who are left without help.-Proverbs 31:8a NLV

Nutrition Challenges In The 21st Century

For most of human history, hunger was by far the most pressing nutrition challenge. As recently as the 1960s, one in three people worldwide was chronically undernourishedhungry because they did not get enough calories. Today, the global hunger rate is about one in 10 people.2

Thomas Malthus, the 18th-century English economist, famously theorized that population growth would eventually outstrip human ability to produce enough food. The Malthusian theory has been debated and proven unwarranted time and again. Malthus didnt know about climate change, but his heirs would now maintain that climate change will inevitably lead to mass hunger.3 Since 2015, the global hunger rate has been on the rise, and it is clear that climate change is a factor.4

Micronutrient deficiencies are a different kind of nutrition challenge, receiving much more attention now. Although micronutrient deficiencies are common in people of all ages, the evidence is definitive that the most important window for human nutrition is the earliestfrom a womans pregnancy to her childs second birthday. This period, often called the 1,000 Days, is the time to ensure that children get the nutrients they need.

The proof is the amazing progress the world has made in just the past two generations. In 1960, 1 in 3 people was hungry. Today, chronic hunger affects 1 in every 8 or 9 people about 795 million people worldwide.

But with so many people going hungry daily, hunger is still a huge problem. Picture all the people in the United States and the European Union. Almost that many people simply dont have enough to eat.

Hunger causes immense suffering and sometimes death. The dead are most commonly young children thousands every day, year after year. Those who survive early childhood malnutrition face lifelong health and learning problems. They are robbed of their God-given potential.

Adults workers and parents cant be fully productive without enough nutritious food. Countries where many people are hungry have weaker economies. And as long as people are hungry, the world is less secure.

But with access to opportunity and the right tools, people can create change. They can do it no matter where they live.

Take Bangladesh, which has millions of hungry people. Farmers there face unusually challenging conditions. A third of the country floods every year, and much of the soil contains arsenic. Yet Bangladesh has made dramatic progress. Hunger and malnutrition have decreased dramatically.

They can virtually end hunger in their time.

Interview by Marie McGrath, ENN

A trip to Washington in early October, gave the opportunity for the ENN to interview Bread for the World and Bread for the World Institute. We first came across Bread for the World when attending a SUN meeting in June 2010 in Washington that they co-hosted with Concern Worldwide. They were obviously in the thick of the political and policy setting aspects of nutrition and we were curious to learn more about what they were about.

I interviewed Asma Lateef, Director, and Scott Bleggi, Senior Policy Analyst for Hunger and Nutrition, at the Bread for the World Institute at their light-filled office overlooking Capitol Hill, the seat of the US government. Scott remarked as we shook hands, that while the view is a selling point for any prospective staff, it reminds them daily of the focus and target of their work: high level influence on US government policy.

Keep These Messages Foremost In Mind

1Many countries today face multiple burdens of malnutrition. As a result, the world overall is not on track to achieve the nutrition goals established by the global community.

2Food systems present a model for addressing the challenges we face. Food systems should place less emphasis on quantity of calories produced, and more on improving dietary quality.

3Failing to come to terms with climate change is the biggest threat to sustainable progress against malnutrition. Food systems are both victims and instigators of climate change and must adapt.
