How To Describe Challah
The texture and consistency of challah bread is similar to brioche due to the high number of eggs in the recipe. Light, fluffy and eggy, leftovers make the ultimate French toast!
If youve never baked homemade bread before, I urge you to give this fool-proof recipe a shot. Believe me, if Im baking bread , I can assure you anyone can do it.
How To Make A Six
To get started, dissolve yeast in warm water in a small bowl or liquid glass measuring cup with 1 tablespoon sugar and set aside.
Note: Youll want to use a large enough bowl as this mixture will start to grow as the yeast activates.
Second, in a separate large bowl or stand-mixer base, whisk together flour, sugar and salt.
Third, add beaten eggs and the water with dissolved yeast and sugar to the large bowl of flour.
Fourth, slowly pour in oil or melted butter and mix well with a wooden spoon or over low to medium speed. If dough doesnt start coming together, add a bit more flour, a couple tablespoons at a time, until it pulls away from the bowl. You want the dough to be sticky though.
Fifth, once the entire mass sticks together turn out onto a floured surface and knead by hand for about 5 minutes, adding in that last cup of flour as needed to form a smooth, pliable glossy mass. This is a great time to get out any aggression!
Sixth, drizzle a large bowl with vegetable oil then place dough into bowl flipping it over to make sure it is covered with the oil. This will prevent it from sticking. Cover with a towel and let dough rise at room temperature until doubled in bulk.
Once the dough has doubled in size, this is the fun part: punch down with a fist then knead one or two more times before dividing the dough in half to begin forming two braided loaves.
From there, you will divide each half into either 3 strands

Many people compare challah and brioche because they are very similar. Both are enriched yeast dough made with eggs, with a similar sweetness, golden shell, and pillow-like texture. For added flavor and texture, sprinkle on some sesame seeds or poppy seeds before baking.
The most significant difference is that Challah is part of the Jewish culture and typically made with oil to keep it kosher. To keep Kosher, dairy and meats are not to be eaten together.

Prepare The Challah Bread Dough

Into a bowl pour in the water, salt,sugar,oil,eggs,yeast and combine all together.
Now add in the flour and mix it together to form a shaggy mass of dough.
Transfer the dough on to a clean work surface and knead the dough for 9-10 minutes.
After kneading ,our dough will be soft and smooth.
Place it into a bowl.
Cover it with a damp cloth or with a plastic film.

Form The Challah Dough
Start by separating one of the eggs and placing the yolk into a large bowl and the white into a small bowl. In the large bowl with the egg yolk, add the other two eggs, 1 cup of lukewarm water, and the vegetable oil. Whisk these together until they are combined.
Next, in the bowl of a stand mixer add the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Use the dough hook attachment to mix the ingredients together until just combined. Add in the wet ingredients and continue mixing on low for 5 to 7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and pulls away from the sides of the mixer.

Stretch And Braid The Dough
Shape the dough into a ball and place the dough ball into a large, lightly greased bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place it somewhere warm and draft-free. Allow the dough to rise until it has doubled in size, which will take about 1 ½ to 2 hours.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and cut it into three equal parts. Stretch and roll each piece gently into ropes about 16 inches long, then lay the ropes vertically and pinch them together at the top. Braid the strands together , and when you reach the bottom of the dough, pinch the ends together tightly.
Place the braided dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, then cover the baking sheet loosely with plastic wrap and let it rise for another hour until the dough is about 1 ½ times its starting size and looks puffed and pillowy.

How To Braid Challah Bread With Step
Now we are ready to braid the challah. We are making two 3-strand braided challah. You could also make one 6-strand challah.
Then, place both challah on a parchment lined baking sheet, spaced apart. Cover with cling wrap and let rise until almost doubled in size, about 45 minutes depending on the room temperature.
Now we are ready to bake. First, brush a generous amount of egg wash evenly over the top and sprinkle with sesame seeds. The egg wash adds shine and creates a beautiful golden crust during baking. Then transfer into a 350 F preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes until the top turns golden brown.
Let the challah bread cool down to room temperature before slicing, about 30 minutes.

The challah bread can be stored at room temperature in a cool dry place for up to 2-3 days.Wrap it with plastic film or keep it in paper bag.

How To Make Challah Bread Step
Note: 2 hours of inactive time
In a small bowl, combine the yeast with the warm water. Add a large pinch of sugar. Stir to dissolve the yeast. Set aside for 10 minutes or so, until the yeast is activated forming a foamy layer.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, egg yolks, sugar, salt, and oil. Mix with a wooden spoon.
Add the yeast mixture, and mix with the wooden spoon until the dough is too hard to mix.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface, and knead by hand for 10 minutes. If the dough is too sticky as you knead, add a very little bit of flour and continue kneading until the dough is soft and smooth. Shape the dough into a ball.
Now place the dough in a large, lightly oiled mixing bowl. Cover with a kitchen cloth and keep it in a warm spot for 1 ½ to 2 hours until the dough rises. The dough is ready when it has doubled.
Punch the dough down and turn it back onto a lightly floured work surface. Divide the dough into three equal pieces, then roll each piece into a rope that’s about 16-18 inches long.
Braid the three ropes together like you would hair squeeze both ends together to complete the braid. Place the braided loaf on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Cover and return to a warm spot for another 30-45 minutes allowing it to rise again.
Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Brush the loaf generously with about 2-3 tablespoon of the egg whites you reserved earlier. Sprinkle the sesame seeds on top.
