Ezekiel Bread Recipe Notes:
- If you have a sensitivity to wheat or gluten, just omit them and add more spelt, millet, lentils, or beans .
- I often cut this recipe in half, it works just as well.
- You need to eat this bread within about 72 hours. This bread does not have any preservatives so it will not stay fresh as long as store bought bread. Do not refrigerate this bread. If you will not consume the loaves within 72 hours you need to slice the bread, wrap it in bakers paper, and freeze it. This way you can take out slices at a time. Let it sit out in room temperature to thaw. Do not place it in the microwave or it will lose nutrients.
- You can buy the grains and beans premixed from several trusted places online however, I prefer to buy my own bags of dry beans and mix them myself. This is much more frugal, and it allows me the freedom to add exactly how much I want.

Behind The Actual Verse Ezekiel : 9
Before we get into how the bread company got started, I had questions about Ezekiel 4:9, so I asked Larry Yarbrough. He joined the religion department at Vermonts Middlebury College in 1983, and is currently the Pardon Tillinghast professor of religion. Before we dove into the Scripture, he told me he keeps Ezekiel 4:9 in his freezer regularly, and that he likes the taste.
Heres what Ezekiel 4:9 says, according to the New International Version:
Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself. You are to eat it during the 390 days you lie on your side.
The verse itself looks like a recipe for bread but then why is Ezekiel supposed to lie on his side? Heres a quick primer!
Ezekiel is a prophet during the last days of Jerusalem before the Babylonians destroyed the city and the temple in 586 BCE, Yarbrough told HuffPost. In this section, God sending Ezekiel out into the plain into a wilderness beyond the city and gives to him a series of directions that Ezekiel is supposed to enact. Prophets make prophecies and perform prophetic acts, and Yarbrough says that both of those in Ezekiel are related to the coming doom of Jerusalem.
Eat the food as you would a loaf of barley bread bake it in the sight of the people, using human excrement for fuel.
– Ezekiel 4:12
Is Ezekiel Bread Gluten
No, Ezekiel bread is not gluten-free. The ingredient list includes “Wheat Gluten”. Plus, there is also naturally-occurring gluten found in the Sprouted Organic Wheat.
You may have heard that people who are gluten sensitive don’t experience the same digestive issues with sprouted bread that they have with other loaves of bread. According to Food for Life, their “unique sprouting process activates enzymes, which naturally metabolize starch, carbohydrates and gluten protein. This may explain why so many gluten sensitive people may tolerate sprouted grains.”

How Did The Sprouted Bread Get Its Name
If you were wondering why the bread’s name seems formatted like a Bible verse, it’s because it actually is one! According to the New International Version, Ezekiel 4:9 states, “Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself.”

Why Do You Find Ezekiel Bread In The Freezer Aisle
Most stores keep preservative-free Ezekiel loaves in freezers in order to prevent molding and retain that bakery-made taste. That’s because there are no preservatives in the bread. Without artificial preservatives, Ezekiel bread will go through the natural process that happens to all real food: spoiling! Freezing delays that process.
Ezekiel Bread Is Teeming With Nutrients
Ezekiel bread is a great source of zinc, vitamin B6, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, iron, and more. Additionally, sprouting grains erodes their anti-nutrients, starches, and gluten. Translation: Your body digests this bread is more easily and allows you to absorb more nutrients. According to the American Journal of Plant Nutrition and Fertilization Technology, sprouting the grains and legumes ups their vitamin synthesis by six to 10 timesespecially vitamins B2 , B5, and B6, as well as activating vitamin C production. Still don’t believe bread can help you reach your weight loss goals? Sprouting grains decreases their fats and carbs by up to 25 percent. Plus, millet’s high fiber and magnesium levels can help “regulate blood sugar levels, which is helpful for diabetics and those trying to lose weight,” says Lori Zanini, RD, CDE, Spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

A Nutritional Breakdown Of Ezekiel : 9 Bread
Now we know that the bread referenced in Ezekiel 4:9 was made only because there were no other resources. And while it sounds healthy, is it? We asked May Zhu, a registered dietician nutritionist and founder of Nutrition Happens. Compared to other bread options available in conventional supermarkets, Ezekiel bread is excellent for those looking to maximize the nutrition content of their food choices, especially when it comes to bread, she said.
She also notes that the whole grains, beans, lentils and spelt found in the original recipe are mostly kept in their whole form, and contain key B vitamins that help with energy production and metabolism in the body. In fact, its a complete plant-based protein thats comparable to protein sources of animal origin. She cautions that because it includes wheat gluten, it might not be suitable for someone with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, but it gets the thumbs-up overall.
And next time you see it in the supermarket, youll know the story behind the nutritious and great-tasting bread. And be thankful you dont have to eat any thats been baked over dung.
Compatible With Vegan And Vegetarian Diets

The unique composition of various grains and legumes also helps make the bread a high-quality, complete protein. That means that it contains sufficient amounts of all nine essential amino acids.

All The Whole Grains And Legumes Used In Ezekiel : 9 Bread Are Sprouted
All of the grains and legumes found in Ezekiel bread are sproutedwhich means that they’re better for you. Sprouting is the natural process that involves these seeds germinating and the plant sprouting out of its shell when coming in contact with water.
So, when foods like Ezekiel bread are labeled “sprouted,” this simply means that this natural process was mimicked, leading to a ton more nutrients and healthful benefits. Sprouted grains and legumes are much lower in gluten, and because the sprouting process breaks down enzyme inhibitors, the bread is, therefore, easier to digest and much more nutrient dense .
You’ll Find Two Legumes In The Ingredient List
In addition to its list of hearty whole grains, Ezekiel bread also packs in two different legumes:
- Organic Sprouted Lentils
- Organic Sprouted Soybeans
Soybeans contain magnesium and fiber, while lentils have been linked to everything from fighting cancer to promoting gut health to aiding weight loss. Get more of the mighty legume in your diet by whipping up some easy and wholesome lentil recipes.

What Ingredients Are In Ezekiel Bread
Just take a peek at a loaf’s ingredient list and you’ll see that Ezekiel is made with all good-for-you ingredients: Organic Sprouted Wheat, Filtered Water, Organic Sprouted Barley, Organic Sprouted Millet, Organic Malted Barley, Organic Sprouted Lentils, Organic Sprouted Soybeans, Organic Sprouted Spelt, Fresh Yeast, Organic Wheat Gluten, Sea Salt.
Let’s break down the ingredient list.
Ezekiel Bread Has Zero Added Sugars
Unlike most commercial bread loaves, which contain added sugars disguised by titles like high fructose corn syrup, date syrup, and even honey, the Ezekiel Flax Sprouted Whole Grain bread doesn’t contain even one gram of the saccharine carb.
On the other hand, competitor Pepperidge Farm adds brown sugar and molasses to their sprouted grain bread for a total of 2 grams of added sugar per slice. That means you’d consume at least 4 grams of sugar in each sandwich you make with this bread.
The fact that Ezekiel bread has no added sugars is good news because consuming too many added sugars can help you pack on belly fat. “When rats are drinking high-fructose corn syrup at levels well below those in soda pop, they’re still becoming obeseevery single one, across the board,” says psychology professor and appetite and sugar addiction specialist Bart Hoebel in a press release about a study investigating the link between the consumption of high-fructose corn syrup and obesity.

A Slice Is High In Protein
“Since Ezekiel bread is made from sprouted grains, it’s higher in protein, which will help to promote satiety and balance blood sugar,” explains Isabel Smith, MS, RD, CDN, and founder of Isabel Smith Nutrition. In fact, sprouting legumes increases their protein levels by a whopping 50 percent! Ezekiel Bread contains five grams of protein per slice. Even better is that it contains all nine essential amino acids, which makes it a complete protein.
Where Should You Store Your Loaf Of Sprouted Bread
Although some stores sell Ezekiel bread at room temperature, the best place to store sprouted bread is in the freezer.
According to Food For Life, your loaf of bread’s shelf life depends on storage:
- fresh loaf: 5 days
- refrigerated loaf: 2 weeks
- frozen loaf: up to a year
Freezing the whole loaf and toasting a slice whenever you want will ensure your bread’s taste is always up to par. So, if you can’t find the sprouted loaf in the bread aisle of the grocery store, hit the freezer section! And while you’re there, check out these other best weight loss foods to buy frozen.

The Weird Story Behind Ezekiel : 9 And The Bread It Inspired
Ive passed Ezekiel 4:9 bread in the supermarket a million times and never gave it a second glance. But I recently wondered what the Ezekiel 4:9 verse actually says.
I Googled it, and came across a funny article from Religion News Service about how Ezekiel bread was originally supposed to be baked on human dung, so of course I became confused. Why would anyone do that? That sent me down a rabbit hole of learning more about both the verse and the bread.
The makers of Ezekiel 4:9 bread, Food for Life, declined to comment for this story. Thanks again for your interest in highlighting Food for Life, marketing manager Gary Torres said in an email. Having said that, in an effort to ensure consistent messaging throughout the marketplace, we would respectfully decline participation at this time. Instead, I spoke to a religious scholar and a nutritionist to shed some light on all things Ezekiel 4:9. This is the weird story behind Ezekiel 4:9 and the bread it inspired.

How Ezekiel : 9 Came To Be
I was hoping to get more information on how Ezekiel bread got started from the Food for Life folks, but instead well go with the info already available. It all started with Max Torres. The Food for Life website says: It was 1964, and our grandfather, Max Torres, worked at a local, neighborhood natural foods store. He started to become more aware of his body and his health, and very passionate about understanding the intricacies of food.
Today, the Torres family continues to run the company. But other than acknowledging that Ezekiel 4:9 products are crafted in the likeness of the Holy Scripture verse Ezekiel 4:9 to ensure unrivaled honest nutrition and pure, delicious flavors, not much else about the origins of the bread has been discussed. Was Torres inspired to try the recipe when he came across the verse? The world will never know! But reporter Jessica Miller was able to get a little more info about the company in a 2008 Jewcy interview with my email pen pal Gary Torres.
But is it actually healthy?

Ezekiel : 9 Bread Nutrition Facts And Health Benefits
Ezekiel 4:9 Bread is a particular type of whole-grain bread sold in most supermarkets and health food stores. According to the manufacturer Food for Life, the bread is inspired by the biblical verse in Ezekiel 4:9: “Take also unto thee Wheat, and Barley, and beans, and lentils, and millet, and Spelt, and put them in one vessel, and make bread of it…”.
The bread is considered quite healthy because it contains only whole grains and legumes, plus it doesn’t have any added sugar. Ezekiel bread has developed a substantial fan base among people seeking multigrain bread alternatives with no added sugar or fat.
Food for Life, building on the original bread’s considerable popularity, now offers Ezekiel 4:9 bread in several different varieties, including Original , Cinnamon Raisin, Flax, Low Sodium, and Sesame. All varieties contain the same blend of grains and legumes.
