Can I Make The Bread Bowls In Advance

The best part about making bread bowls is that you can easily tailor the recipe to accommodate your schedule. Once hollowed, however, we recommend enjoying bread bowls within 24 hours.

Mix-ahead directions:

After the initial rise in step three of the bread bowl recipe, punch the dough down and divide the dough into balls as directed in step four. However, rather than place them on a baking tray to proof a second time, refrigerate the dough balls in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Then, when youre ready to bake, remove the dough from the fridge, let it come to room temperature and proceed with step five. One added benefit to this method is the bread bowls will develop a stronger, more robust flavor due to the slow fermentation of the yeast that will occur while the dough rests in the fridge.

Bake-ahead directions:

Bake and prepare the bread bowls as directed through step five. Then, store in an airtight container for up to three days. When ready to serve, hollow out as directed in step six and fill as desired. Next, take a look at these other copycat bread recipes.

Storing And Freezing Bread Bowls:

To freeze the dough, punch it down after the first rise and store in an airtight, freezer safe container or bag for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and then continue with step 5, dividing the dough.

To freeze the baked bread bowls, store them in an airtight, freezer safe container or bag for up to 3 months. Allow them to thaw on the counter and then warm them in the oven before serving.

First, punch down the dough by poking with your fingers to release built up air. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. I use a kitchen scale for this job which makes it super easy. Each dough ball will weight about 8.5 ounces.

Scissors work great for cutting the dough into smaller pieces. Use greased hands and greased scissors.

Use a lightly floured surface if needed. With one of the individual small dough balls cradled in both hands, fold the dough ball into the center to make a smooth ball.

Place the smooth ball with the folded seam down onto the parchment paper lined baking sheet. Four homemade bread bowls dough balls per baking sheet.

With a serrated or sharp knife, score an X on the top of all the dough balls. Create the egg wash by whipping together the egg white with the one tablespoon of milk.

Using a pastry brush, brush with egg wash to coat the dough ball with a thin layer of the egg mixture. When you brush with egg wash, this will create a nice crust on the finished bowls.

Cover the dough balls with a clean kitchen towel. Let rise and let the dough rest.

A Few Notes On The Method

The recipe itself is as straightforward as the ingredient list. I use my stand mixer to make the dough, but if you dont have one you can do it by hand. You will have to use a little muscle to work the dough together until the proper consistency is reached and then knead by hand until the consistency indicated in the recipe is achieved.

Scoring the dough is done to encourage the rolls to expand upwards in the oven. Use a sharp knife.

We brush the dough twice with egg wash, once before baking and then again halfway through. This encourages a deep golden brown crust, deeper than it would be if you were to only brush your bread bowls once.

Continue to use the KitchenAid stand mixer with the dough hook attachment on low speed or use your well-floured hands. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes which helps the gluten in the flour work together.

To test if the dough is kneaded enough, use clean hands, and pinch the dough between two of your fingers. If the dough hardly sticks to your fingers, it is ready for the next step.

But, if the dough is sticky, add the remaining flour and continue to knead for about 3 more minutes.

Overview: How To Make Bread Bowls

Bread-making probably seems impossible, but think of it this way: its one of the most basic foods. Just simple ingredients mixed together, left alone to work some magic, shaped, and baked. Thats the process and its 100% something you can handle.

  • Mix the dough ingredients together. You can use a mixer or do this by hand. The dough should be thick, yet soft and only slightly sticky.
  • Form the dough into a ball. On a lightly floured surface, shape the dough into a ball and place it into a large, greased bowl.
  • Let the dough rise. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm environment until doubled in size, about 90 minutes.
  • Punch down the dough. Place it onto a lightly floured surface.
  • Cut the dough into 6 even pieces. Form each into a ball. Place on prepared baking sheets 3 dough balls per sheet.
  • Score an X into each. Lightly brush the tops of each dough ball with egg wash and use a sharp knife to score an X into the tops of each. The egg wash is what makes them so shiny! If not eating as a bread bowl, the X makes it easy to tear into pieces. Ease of breaking apart is crucial in a bread lovers world.
  • Bake. These bread bowls take about 30 minutes to bake.
  • Cut out the tops. When cool enough to handle, cut a large round out of the top of each bread bowl. Scoop out the center and fill with soup.

Dominos Bread Bowl Pasta Being Discontinued

Well over a decade ago, in 2009, Dominos announced what was back then the newest and most daring addition to their product range. This refers to their new pasta range, or specifically what it was served in.

While there was an option for customers to order it inside of a tin, Dominos announced back then that there will also be an option to order this new pasta range of theirs inside of a bread bowl. This combination is one that was loved by many almost immediately.

The name of bread bowls speaks for itself, but for those that arent completely familiar with them, these are little bowls that are made out of bread itself. They are completely edible and greatly add to the taste of whatever is put inside of them, especially the paste thats offered by Dominos.

As already mentioned, the combination was a great one. While it wasnt available in Dominos all around the world, it was still featured in most franchises of the brand and became one of the most popular products they had to offer.

This remained the case for many years to come. It was a great snack to have which worked excellently for most people because of the simplicity. However, Dominos announced something unexpected back in the earlier months of 2017. This was news regarding the bread bowl pasta, and specifically how Dominos will begin discontinuing it from here on out. After a few months or so, the bread bowl pasta was nearly erased from the brands menu.

How To Make Step By Step Recipe Instructions

    • Dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water in your mixing bowl. You will need a large bowl for this recipe. I use a 6 quart stand mixer fitted with a dough hook to make this bread, but it can be made by hand as well.
    • Let it sit for about 5 minutes to let the yeast get foamy.
    • Add the olive oil, salt and all 6 cups of flour.
    • As you can see in picture 8 it looks like there is too much flour, but dont worry, it will all mix in.
    • After all the flour is mixed in your dough should look like picture 9, a shaggy ball of dough that cleans the sides of the mixing bowl.
    • Knead at a medium speed for 5 minutes, or by hand for 10 minutes. The dough should end up like picture 10 and 11, very smooth, elastic-y and the sides of the bowl should be completely clean.
    • Remove the dough hook and cover the bowl with a clean dish towel to rise.
    • Over the next hour, about every 10 minutes or so, knead the bread dough in the bowl about 3 times. This is going to create that chewy french bread crust. It doesnt have to be exactly every ten minutes, but you need to have kneaded the dough at least 4 times over that hour.
    • After the hour just let the dough rise until doubled. This should take about 30 minutes.
