Portobello Mushroom Burger Buns

Why You Cant Eat Standard Bread During A Keto Diet
If you already know how a keto diet works you dont need to explain why you canìt eat normal bread during it.
But for those who dont know, when you are on a keto diet you cant eat anything that contains carbs or sugar.
In fact, a keto diet is more about what you cant eat than what you should eat.
The reason why you must avoid carbs and sugar is that the whole point of a keto diet is getting into ketosis, a status where your body begins using fat cells as a source of energy .
As you may know, bread is a great source of carbs and you simply cant eat it during a keto.
However, completely renouncing bread isnt easy and when a diet isnt easy you are more likely to interrupt it and not stick to it.
Keto bread, in this case, can become one of the most important foods of your keto diet.
What Does Keto Mean
Keto is short for ketogenic. Following a keto diet involves eating food thats high in fat and low in carbs. Eating this way will put your body into a metabolic state thats known as ketosis.
When youre in a state of ketosis, your body burns fat rather than carbohydrates for fuel. Usually, the body will naturally burn glucose, which is a sugar thats found in carbohydrates. But if there arent any carbohydrates in your system, the body will burn fat. Ketosis also allows fat to be transformed into ketones in the liver to supply energy to your brain.1
Changing to a keto diet, means the fat that you consume, or that is stored, is burnt. Its precisely why the keto diet has become such a popular way of people losing weight.

Do You Need To Refrigerate Keto Bread

Yes, it is ideal to store keto bread in the refrigerator. It is also good to not slice the bread ahead of time. To prolong the shelf life of your keto bread you will want to slice it when you are hungry, and keep the entire loaf in a Ziploc bag, or a Tupperware container in the fridge. It will last in the fridge for 7-10 days.

How Does The Keto Diet Work
A keto diet has been shown to promote weight loss, particularly in the short term. When you dont eat carbs for a few days, your body enters a state called ketosis.
Usually, your body would use the glucose from carbs to give you energy. During ketosis, your body starts to break down fat and protein for energy instead. This helps you to shed those pounds.
But, the keto diet may actually do way more than that.
The diet has been used to treat epilepsy in children since way back in the 1920s. And there are studies to suggest it can help in the management of other medical conditions, including heart disease, Alzheimers, polycystic ovary syndrome and even acne.
Pretty impressive, right?

Depending on the type of flour you are using and the recipe you follow, your keto bread may come out with a different carb count, but it will still be a healthier alternative to wheat bread.

- Keto Yeast Bread Many people have asked if you can add yeast to the keto white bread recipe in this post, and I dont think you can because of how the whipped egg white batter comes together. So go make this other recipe instead if thats what youre looking for.

What Is A Net Carb
A net carb, or net carbohydrate, is a math equation. You subtract the dietary fiber from the total carbohydrates. The number you get is the net carb. So, if your slice of bread contains 10 grams of carbohydrate and 6 grams of dietary fiber, then the net carb amount is 4 grams.
Dietary fiber naturally comes from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, but fiber additives are often used in keto-type bread products. Common ones include chicory root fiber, cellulose, wheat bran, oat fiber, soluble corn fiber, flaxseed meal, or psyllium husk powder. Be sure to read the labels to understand the ingredients youre consuming.

A Healthy Way To Make Bread Keto
One of the tricks in this recipe that takes this keto bread from good to great is the . Youre going to want to separate the yolks and the whites. The reason for this is that were going to whip the whites until they are fluffy. Were looking for soft peaks.
Beating the whites is the answer to the denseness that comes with making an almond flour bread. Ive made countless baked goods using almond flour and the main problem Ive encountered is how dense the finished product is.
The fluffy whites in unison with the high dosage of baking powder do a good job of getting this loaf nice and fluffy and adding some air pockets into the loaf. This makes for a better tasting bread recipe.

Can You Eat Bread On The Keto Diet
You can, maybe a slice or two here and there, but you ideally dont want to be eating too much of it. This is because a keto diet involves eating minimal carbs less than 50g a day. However, a slice of bread contains around 20g of carbs, which is quite a chunk of your daily carbohydrate allocation.2
Overall, the general intake guidance when following a keto diet is 70 to 80% fat, 15 to 20% protein and 5 to 10% carbohydrate. The good news is, carbs arent just present in bread, they can also be found in leafy, non-starchy vegetables and low sugar fruit, rather than wholewheat and wholegrains that are way too carb-heavy.3
However, you dont totally have to break up with bread if youre eating keto because you can a) eat less of it or b) eat keto-friendly bread, which brings us on nicely to the next question
While it may be tempting to cut out bread altogether, dont forget that wholegrains are full of fibre, energy and B vitamins that are all essential for everyday health. Because of this, either cutting back on traditional breads, simply by eating less of it or eating low carb bread is the ideal solution.4
Tips To Make The Best Recipe
- Do not use a loaf pan bigger than 8 x 4-inches, or else your bread will lack the rise and dome shape.
- Ensure there are 1-2 inches of parchment paper overhanging the sides of the loaf pan. This makes removing the bread from the pan so much easier.
- Oven makes and models differ. Mine took 40 minutes to make, but Id recommend checking up at the 35 minutes mark. Dont stress if it takes up to 45 minutes to bake.

Thinslim Zero Carb Bread
For those of you that have no wiggle room in your diet for carbs, ThinSlim Zero Carb Bread will be for you. Weighing in at zero net carbs and 7g of fiber, this bread isnt as airy as some of the others on this list but will make a favorable substitute if the texture isnt an issue for you.
Where to Buy: ThinSlim products can be bought at Walmart, Martins and Giant food stores, and of course, Amazon.
Another zero carb bread is the one from KetoThins. Their bread is a bit more filling than the others and holds a cake-like texture. They even have low carb brownies!!
Where to Buy: I have only seen this brand for purchase online at Amazon and Julian Bakery.
Fold The Batter Dont Stir
After mixing the first half of the egg whites into the batter in the food processor, youll need to fold that mixture into the remaining egg whites. Its important not to break them down completely at this step. Otherwise, your bread will be dense and flat! Just keep folding gently until you dont have chunks or streaks.
A few people have complained about the batter being too thick to fold in the egg whites. Most likely this was a difference in measurements or ingredients, but if this happens, you can salvage it. Just pulse in a little more egg whites into the food processor to make the main batter a little thinner, then fold that into the egg whites.

What Is Keto Bread
Theres not a strict definition for keto bread, but on a basic level, its bread that has a lower carbohydrate count than other types of bread. Its best to find keto bread thats also made without wheat and other gluten-containing grains, but when youre purchasing pre-made bread, thats not always easy. As long as youre not sensitive to gluten, wheat-based breads can fit into a keto plan, too.

Sugar Free Banana Bread
We think sticking to sugar free foods is super important. Thats why our banana bread uses banana extract free from sugar instead of the traditional high sugar fruit. We also subbed regular sugar for a low carb keto friendly sweetener known as erythritol. It wont spike your insulin like regular sugar meaning it will prevent the well known sugar crash. Making low sugar recipes is also important for keto dieters because it keeps the carbs low so you can stay on track. Creating banana bread thats free from bananas and instead uses banana extract is a big step towards reducing excess un-needed carbs.
What Kind Bread Is Keto Friendly
In general keto friendly breads are made of coconut flour or almond flour. These flours are used to produce a bread that is very low in carbs, and free from common allergens.
For a sweet and moist bread option try our keto banana bread recipe.
Store bought low carb breads will typically use a much larger list of ingredients. Some common ingredients in store bought keto breads are vital wheat gluten, oat fiber, soy flour, wheat protein, and more. While these breads taste good and are more convenient than making a loaf of bread from scratch, they do contain some ingredients most people on a keto diet would like to avoid.

How To Eat Bread On The Keto Diet
If you follow the keto diet, you have a very strict carbohydrate limit to adhere to and depending on what else you eat in a day, you may only be able to enjoy an open-faced sandwich. “People eating keto breads should keep in mind that the nutrition facts apply to one serving, usually one slice,” says Valdez.
And some keto breads are high in saturated fat. “Some brands include plenty of saturated fats, which is correlated with heart disease,” says Valdez. The Keto Thin Bread from Julian Bakery, for instance, contains 5 grams saturated fat per slice.
One more potential drawback: “Keto breads may not be as rich in other nutrients that are found in whole grains, such as B vitamins and minerals,” says Sharon Palmer, MSFS, RDN, a dietitian in Ojai, CA.
